THE RUNDOWN

Welcome to the April 2015 edition of the Woodstock Runners newsletter

The rundown on members

Autumn has arrived and with it, cool and less humid weather, conditions favourable to all runners. We can look forward to running and racing without the terrible humidity which has been with us for many months and hopefully scores of PBs are on the way. Along with this ideal weather and the soon to end daylight saving, we must also look to safety and when running in the dark, remember to keep to footpaths where possible; wear light coloured or reflective clothing; use a headlight or torch; and always be aware motorists are not expecting to see runners on roads in the dark.

Many thanks to all involved in the recent Handicap and congratulations to placegetters along with those who recorded a PB. Special mention to Bronwyn who become our fastest ever female in the event.

Woodstock had 6 members run the Six Foot Track. Congrats to all who started at Explorers Tree and made the treacherous 45km course to Jenolan Caves. I wonder did they realise there are organised tours to accomplish this feat and you can choose either a 2 or 3 day hike.

Congratulations to Peta for completing her first ever Olympic distance triathlon in Auckland. Good luck to all competing in the next few weeks, especially to those travelling to Canberra for the 5, 10, Half or Marathon. There are still places available on the Woodies tour.

Happy Easter to all Woodies and as long as you keep running, you can eat your Easter eggs.

Kerry

Thanks to Michael Anderson, our former Rundown Editor in Chief, for his time, effort and creative designs that have graced the pages of our great newsletter for the past 4-5 years. As happens, life gets busy and sometimes you have to juggle and shuffle things around in the relay of life! Michael is going to continue to support the club in his coaching capacity however from this edition, Bron Hager will carry the baton and take our Chief Editor role. When you see Michael around the grounds, please give him pat on the back and a heartfelt thanks!

It's a warm welcome to Bron and a shout to members to please don't hesitate to contribute articles, ideas and stories to share among your fellow Woodies.

Cronulla run

Thanks Kerry for hosting another successful Cronulla run with breakfast following at Alley Break cafe. Runners enjoyed distances from 6km-15km, while others ran to Cronulla.

Looking for a Sat Afternoon Cross Country (XC) hit-out?

Did you know that Woodstock Runners is now an affiliated club of ANSW and our members can participate in inter-club and state events in our uniform as representatives of Woodstock Runners!

There is going to be more info coming about what ANSW's membership offers, however we though it may be of interest for you to know now that there are some interesting winter inter-club events that we can access immediately.

TheWest Metropolitan XC series is held every Sat afternoon until 25 April. Distances are 2km to 8km with races from 2pm. This week is at Hawthorne Canal, Haberfield. Other weeks are at Concord, Ramsgate & Rydalmere.

Sutherland Districts Athletics also host a great Sat afternoon XC series of 2km to 10km distances in travel-worthy places like Darkes Forest, Heathcote, Audley, Waterfall, Sutherland & Bangor. This Sat is at Wanda!

A few Woodies are going to take advantage of the 2 event trial period (before being required to take out one of the ANSW memberships), and head to the West Met Hawthorne Parade event this Sat afternoon and check it out, so if keen, feel free to join in and see you there!

Canberra estimated times

We are only a few weeks out from Canberra! It's time to put your thinking caps
on and come up with your estimated time for your event, whether it's 5km, 10km, half marathon, full marathon or ultra marathon.

Send your estimated time toFrank. There will be a prize for closest estimate!

Orange 2015

By Matt Westwood

The 42 000

Any idiot can run, it takes a special kind of idiot to run a marathon.

My marathon at the Orange Running Festival was the single most painful run I have ever done. And, it is because of this I have been asked to share my experience with you all, right down to the chaffing nipples.

My preparation didn’t go exactly to plan. I had initially entered the Australian Running Festival marathon and was happily ticking away at my training plan, safe in the knowledge that I had a good twelve weeks to prepare myself both physically and mentally.
