THE RUNDOWN

Welcome to the May 2015 edition of the Woodstock Runners newsletter

The rundown on members

Let us hope our recent atrocious weather has merely inconvenienced members, but caused no catastrophic issues to families, homes etc. We may need to put in some extra training to make up for lost sessions. Go easy though, we cannot make it all in one big run.

Jo Doughty-Roberts and family have returned from the UK and France. Thanks for the photos, Jo. The Lucases and Ovendens have been touring Europe, having first attended a family wedding in Turkey.  Sarah Waladan is in Iran, while Alex Hill took in a parkrun in Cork on his travels.  We look forward to hearing all your stories.

Peta Bray flew “across the ditch” to Auckland for her first attempt at the Olympic Distance Triathlon. Unfortunately in heavy rain, her brakes failed and she took a fall a third of the way through the cycle leg. Courageously she managed to finish, though is still suffering from injuries to her thigh and elbow 4 weeks later. We hope you are back running before too long, Peta.

Susan Murray, Greg Muir and Steve Garamy contested the Kurnell Sprint Triathlon last week. Susan was 2nd in her age category, while Greg was placed 4th despite his bike chain coming off twice. Steve is off to Port Macquarie in a week for his first Ironman Triathlon. Good luck Steve.

Kim Cayzer had “a tough day at the office” on Monday at the Boston Marathon. She made the finish fighting against low temperatures, rain and wind with ice on her tights and frozen lumps in her gels. That’s what Woodies are made of.  Well done, Kim.

An enjoyable weekend was had by all who travelled to our Nation’s Capital for the Canberra Running Festival. Many excellent performances were recorded from the 5k event through to the Ultramarathon. Congratulations one and all.

Georgia Lawrence competed in the National Orienteering Championships in South Australia over 2 days and was placed 6th in Australia and 2nd in NSW in the under 20 Events - a great result, Georgia.

At the Rolls Royce stand at Cronulla’s Vintage Car Show I bumped into Ross Keys, looking fit and well. He asked to be remembered to all who remember him.  A friend and I enjoyed having an informed look over the beautiful machines.

Thanks from all of us to Kath and Frank for a delightful morning at their Anzac Breakfast Run.  The hospitality was outstanding, the courses excellent and the amazing breakfast was “out of this world”.  We certainly did not go home hungry.

We send our very best Woodies good luck to Martin and Anthony as they take on the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon.  Comrades 90km race takes place in South Africa at the end of this month.  Have a wonderful time and trust you’ll be thrilled with your performance.

Hope all are looking forward to the many races on the calendar over the next few months. It’s always easier when we have a goal in our sights. Let’s go for it and good luck to all.

Kerry

City2Surf training runs

The Woodstock coaches are organising City2Surf training runs again this year. The runs will be held on June 28 and July 26, and will have a variety of pace groups.

More details to follow shortly!

Anzac Day run

Kath and Frank hosted the 2015 Anzac Day run on the day after Anzac Day. A rainy morning didn't deter 20 runners from coming along for a 5km or 10km run, with 10 more joining for breakfast.

Thanks Kath and Frank for another great event!

Canberra estimated times results

Congratulations to Dot for having the closest estimated time for the Australian Running Festival, in what was probably the closest result ever, beating Bridget by 1 second! Dot estimated 29:30 for her 5km, and finished in 29:49. Bridget finished the half marathon in 1:59:20 after estimating 1:59:00.

Dot will win a piece of Woodstock gear for her effort!

Race Recaps

Canberra marathon 2015

By Gwenola Le Lu

Canberra from the eyes of a first timer

Canberra was full of firsts for me. Not only was it my first marathon, but it was my first Woodstock tour, my first running race away from Sydney and the first race I have gone into feeling under prepared.

A few running buddies have been pestering me to run a marathon for quite a while and as I also do triathlons, I figured it would be good training to learn to run on tired legs. I've done quite a few half marathons, and after the last one my husband, who insists he isn't a runner, congratulated me on running half a race.

Tales from the back - Canberra half mara

By Angela Haynes

I set out to make a point that a half mara is do-able no matter what your fitness!  My plan wasn’t pretty but I was confident I could at least walk the darn thing.  It turns out this wasn’t about how fast or how fit I was, it was about who you meet when you least expect it.  To set the scene, this was the plan I started with… the race was however, about so much more!

Manly Dam

By Andrew Webb

This month's trail run was 20km at Manly Dam, actually about 10k around the dam, and 10k in Garigal National Park. First, a big congratulations to the organisers, who managed to mark a course so well that I didn't get lost. Not even momentarily. This has never happened (to me) before.

Name: Michael Sy

Runs at: MNT.

I run once a week. I try to be the king of casual. Monday  nights just do it for me.

Favourite Distance: 400m.

I am really starting to get into the shorter distance ‘power oriented’ sessions. Monday’s are a great tool for improving this.

Why did you join Woodstock: My very close friend and trusted critic, Claudia Beyer, almost beat me in a race. I couldn't believe it, so I had to go along and see what the secret was all about. I was not disappointed.

How long have you been running: I have been running since I was 14. I saw my neighbour going for a run. I was trying to become more acquainted with his sister, so I had earn to his respect by taking him head on in a long distance race. I beat him.

Why do you enjoy running: It pushes the body in a way that is very beneficial.

What is your most memorable running story: I thought I had fully recovered from a bad bout of diarrhoea – it’d been at least 24 hours since the last toilet break. I definitely wasn't through it. I went for a run at Birchgrove Oval at 10pm at night (after a uni study session). Running loosens things up.  I was in the middle of my session too – running an excellent pace. It was like a transition during a tri-athlon.  Pants off, deposit made, pants back on – 4 minute km pace sustained.

What are your running goals for the next 6 months: Wipe the grin off Marty’s face!

What do you do when you’re not running: Being a normal person – surprisingly. Working, cooking, drinking, sleeping and training at the gym before work!

What's your goal?

Name: Kath Bolitho

Recent race result: Canberra Half Marathon - 1:40:30

Next running goal: Sub 45min Cooks River Fun Run. Looking forward to this one!

Name: Gwenola Le Lu

Recent race result: Debut marathon in Canberra - 3:32:4

Next running goal: To be able to run a fast 8km after a fast 1km swim and fast 30km bike mid May. NSW club champs.
