Timing Tags - initial physical properties
The tags are manufactured by Ipico - http://www.ipicosports.com/products - they pretty much only do timing systems for athletic events. The tag is the IP-X tag - http://www.ipicosports.com/files/u1/IPX_RFIDtag_0.pdf . The tag is more complicated (unfortunately) than standard RFID tags - it uses a dual frequency system; the tag data carrier frequency at 6.8 MHz and the power-up frequency at 125 kHz. The dual frequencies supposedly allow the tags to be detected at greater range - this means that you can both detect tags moving faster and at a faster rate (i.e. more tags in a small amount of time) because there is a larger "window" where each tag can be read - not necessarily only directly above the reading mat. The tags are not reprogrammable, they have a factory programmed 64 bits ID.
